NY Botanical Garden Orchid Show - Pt 1

A few weeks ago Chris and I went to the annual orchid show at the NY Botanical Garden.  There was not a theme to the show this year, just beautiful orchids everywhere we looked and funny enough, this was my favorite show in years.

There are too many photos to share in one post so I will spread out the eye candy over a couple of weeks.

 

We even had some fun with the new digital camera with some of it's interesting features.

The displays were just stunning this year and words are not really needed to take the tour.  This event is always a visual treat for the eyes and a perfect afternoon spent celebrating spring.  ENJOY!!!

The New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show, Part 2

I've been going through more of my Orchid show photos since the last batch I posted, trying to pick out some new favorties to show you. This was one of my favorite parts of the show, a large display wall filled with white Phalaenopsis. It was simply gorgeous!!!!!

Photos of this wall were hard to get as the person who designed the show this year put a bench in front of this lovely backdrop of Phalaenopsis, so I had to do a lot of waiting to get photos without people in them.

Multi tiered square planters could be seen reaching toward the sky in many different locations throughout the show.

This particular planter is filled to the brim with Phalaenopsis Orchids of all different colors and varieties.

Orchids were growing.........

And Hanging from every available surface.

Floor displays were everywhere. Orchids were nestled in with all the other tropical plants that fill the conservatory.

The New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show, Part 1

Whether you are an orchid collector or admirer, The New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show is a treat for the eyes each year. I took over 160 photos and the ones I've chosen are just too great in number to show in one post so, I'll have to break them up into groups in upcoming posts. The theme of this years show is Brazilian Modern. The above pond is in the entrace to the conservatory and the display always features different Orchids seeming to float in planters on the waters surface. This year, the beautiful mosaic art piece shown is being used as a focal point in the display.

These beautiful cascading baskets are actually chandeliers (with lights) made from different varieties of purple Orchids. There were 4 of these beautiful pieces in the main display room. I would imagine they look gorgeous at night when they are lit.

This is the main display room with a pond surrounded by Orchids, the 4 chandeliers and in the back, a piece of modern art.

New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show '08- Close Ups, Part 2

I thought I would start and end my final post on the '08 Orchid Show, with another close up of those gorgeous arches filled with Orchids, that lined this one room in the conservatory. If you want to see more extensive photos of these arches that are overflowing with Orchids, go to my Out and About section in the right hand column and you will get to see some beautiful overall shots of this area.

I showed Miltonia, the Pansy Orhid.......a favorite of mine, in the last post about the show. This however is another favorite, these are all Vanda Orchids and I just think they are stunning, I love the beauty of their shapes and petals, the colors are to die for. This purple beauty is called Trevor Rathbone "Banjong".

Also a little tidbit...did you know that the Vanda Orhid is also called " The Rainbow Orchid"?

You might remember I made tile coasters and mugs out of some of the photos of this particular Orhid...I just thought the deep purple color was so beautiful......purple also happens to be my favorite color.

This pink beautify is called - Vanda , Pat Delight "Pink Tango".

I also think this one was among my favorites, probably because I also love the color blue. This one again is a Vanda - Sansai Blue.

Well, that's it for the photos of this years show. I'll be back with more Orhid show photos in '09. This was my favorite show so far though so I'm not sure how they will top it next year but....you never know. I also have a feeling I'll be creating a painting from one of these Vanda photos, sometime down the road.

New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show '08- Close Ups

As it turns out, I lied when I told you I would show you the Orchid show in 2 posts, I now realize that I have to do 3 posts to cover all of my favorite photos. This post , as promised, will feature mostly close-ups. As I started looking through all the photos again, I realized there are just way too many gorgeous close-ups to show at once so, you can expect more eye candy photos in the upcoming weeks. The above is a hanging basket of Miltonia (The Pansy Orchid) specifically Patricia Marie Linares.

I just love the Pansy Orchid, one of my all time favorites. There were also lots of beautiful Vanda Orchids this year, another favorite and I'll be showing those next time. This Orchid is Pacific Cloud....gee, I wonder why?

I loved some of these photos so much that I created products for my new website with them. I used some of the Pansy and Vanda Orchid photos to make mugs, framed tiles, jewelry boxes and coasters. The images came out so crisp and beautiful on the products.

As we were walking through one of the rooms, we came upon this Dendrobium species, hanging right above our heads. I had to get some overall shots and close-ups of it.

Finally, a pretty group of Phalaenopsis Orchids, sharing a big pot. What I really love about the Orchid show is that they nestle the Orchids in with all the other tropical plants that are a staple in the conservatory. It makes for such a beautiful display.

In other news, in the next few weeks my new and shall I say.....much improved website will be up and running. I have to thank my husband Chris for this because he is doing it all for me and is very talented with web design. Another plus of this scenerio is that he works cheap. : )

Also, in the upcoming weeks, look for a new line of original "seed packet" art on masonite board. I'll also be turning these paintings into cool shirts and tote bags....a fun adventure.
