First I started with an idea and a sketch. Rather then draw directly onto the canvas, I prefer taping together several sheets of tracing paper and drawing my design on that, then transferring it to the canvas.
The background is a bright and vivid sky with whimsical circles to finish it out nicely. All three of my butterflies are perched on Apple Blossom branches and each one is painted with lots of attention to detail .
I tried to give each butterfly its own look and pose with the uppermost monarch being the center of attention on this painting. This piece measures a very large 36" h x 24" w and is painted on 1 1/2" deep gallery canvas with the sides painted black so it needs no frame.
I have to admit I've been enjoying some poetry lately and I found this pretty one about the butterfly:
BUTTERFLY
Flutter by,
Butterfly,
Floating flower in the sky.
Kiss me with your petal wings--
Whisper secrets, tell of spring.

Hi Ruth,
Love your new painting of the gorgeous Monarch.
I also, on very detailed pieces sketch first and then transfer to the canvas. I have always done it this way.
Looks like you are having lots of fun in the studio. As always, only the best comes from your vision my friend.
Thank you for stopping by and your kind words.
Back to work for me now, busy studio this week.
Happy Creating.
Hugs, Celestina Marie

loving these pretty butterflies ruth! xo
Such a lovely painting. Butterflies are difficult to paint and you captured them perfectly. I love the colors you used in the painting too.

Hi Ruth, I love this new painting! Your monarchs are beautifully detailed...and the background is pretty too!
I prefer to trace my drawing onto the canvas too....I seem to erase a lot before I'm happy with a drawing! :)
What a beautiful painting Ruth! Have a great time on your vacation!
